The festive season is meant to be fun, but often it’s just stressful and we just put on the ‘smile and wave’ face and push through.
Then add in peri (or post) menopause, and it can feel exhausting; not necessarily for everyone, but for a lot of women, especially when the symptoms show up in different ways for each of us so it’s not necessarily obvious…. so we ignore, it get frustrated and usually don’t mention it.
Meanwhile, there’s Christmas and New year looming on the horizon, just over there.
More social events. More late nights. More sugar. More pressure. Less sleep. Less routine. Less tolerance for…a lot of things.
And suddenly everything feels harder than it used to.
If this is you, you’re not broken. Your hormones and nervous system are simply more sensitive right now. The key is not doing more. It’s doing things perhaps differently.
So I thought I’d put together five simple ways to support yourself through this festive season.
1. Protect your energy first
Before saying yes to everything, ask yourself if you actually have the energy for it.
You’re allowed to:
Skip events
Leave early
Have quiet days between busy ones
Your energy matters just as much as your time.
2. Eat to keep your blood sugar steady
Hormonal changes make blood sugar swings more intense in peri menopause.
This can drive fatigue, anxiety, irritability and cravings.
Focus on:
Protein at every meal
Regular meals
Drinking plenty of water
Not skipping meals to save up for later
This alone can make a huge difference to how you feel.
3. Lower the pressure on yourself
You don’t need to do everything perfectly. The perfect house, food, gifts and attitude are not required.
Ask yourself:
What actually matters most this season
What can I simplify
What am I doing out of obligation
Simple is powerful.
4. Calm your nervous system daily
Many peri menopause symptoms are nervous system driven.
Anxiety, poor sleep, irritability and overwhelm all improve when your nervous system feels safer.
Try:
Slow breathing
Gentle walks
Stretching or fascia release
Less late nights and scrolling
Small daily habits add up quickly.
5. Redefine what festive means to you now
You might not want the same pace you used to. That’s not a problem, it’s wisdom.
This might now look like:
Slower mornings
Smaller gatherings
More rest
More meaningful connection
You get to choose what feels right for you now.
A gentle reminder
Peri (and post) menopause is a transition, not a failure. You don’t need to push through this time of life. You are meant to slow down, even just a little – enough to take notice of what your mind and body is telling you; to change your pace and take care of yourself in new ways.
You deserve a festive season that supports you, not one that drains you.
